It's been fun...

Hey everypony. We have a bit of unfortunate news. More after the break.

Well everypony, FG has taken on some unfortunate incidents as of late. Seems our saboteur has struck again, dealing damage to our overall work progress.

In addition, intentional attacks have been made against FG courtesy of a site seemingly dedicated to harassing us.

In light of all this negativity, FG has made a decision on its future developments. Simply put, it isn't worth this level of harassment.

FG will be shutting down for a while, effective immediately. This doesn't necessarily mean the end, but it is likely.

On behalf of the entire FG team, it was a pleasure making this game for all of you. We hope to continue our work in making something special for you in the future.

Thank you,
Writers Block
FG Project Lead

(Glimmer of hope. We may be better off than realized. I can't say much, but please know FG is not dead.Thank you to those that support us! We'll fight as long as we are able.)

  1. Aw man! Not this game too!
Well it was fun as long as it lasted. Really looked forward to other acts. Hope the harassment stops and you can continue development.

    2. I wish people would stop assuming Hasbro were the ones behind this. If you read the post, it says nothing about a C&D order or Hasbro at all. It talks about hackers and saboteurs.

    3. He wasn't assuming it's Hasbro. He was just listing other great games in development that were stopped.

Treat people like you want to be treated. Some of you may recgonize this from somewhere but i wont metion it because i will explain it for you. By treating other people bad like harrasement your not making him/her look bad by saying like its bad or this is not like the original or it defies froms it. Thats not the way your suppose to think if you treat people or a group like that your only putting a bad name for yourself and making yourself look bad for those group or for other people. This is because you are TAKING AWAY THE FREEDOM TO EXPRES OPINION. That is the real consequence let that be a lesson for all people in the world and espacialy the hackers and saboteurs.

  2. So what? That's it? Game Over? You're gonna roll over for your saboteur and let him win? Don't you dare go out Writer's Block, not like this!

  4. Unfortunate, to say the least. This game was taking a unique direction that you don't see very often. I was looking forward to seeing this game through to the end. It is upsetting that the loudest voices heard were the ones that wanted to see this project crumble.
Well, whatever happens, know that I respect your decision and wish you all the best in the future.

  5. I can understand taking a break to cool off. I just hope it isn't permanent, as you all have been doing a SPLENDID job so far on the project. Remember that having haters comes with the territory of being popular. I pray the encouragement from your fans will overwhelm the boos of the neighsayers and renew in you all the drive you had when you started this project.

  6. PLEASE don't stop and give up just because of a few idiot haters.

If you make anything on the internet, you'll get haters from SOMEWHERE. You really just have to straight up ignore them.

On another note: That "saboteur" has got to be the saddest piece of shit I've heard of in a LONG time. Taking this much time to stop you guys? So pathetic.

    1. I can verify that Equestria Gaming has nothing to do with this. I may have given your game a negative review, but there is no way I would want to delete your assets and prevent you from creating any future games (which would have hopefully been better than Act 1).

    4. While you've certainly done nothing to help FG, even failing to view a demo as just that, we are not sure if you would attack us that directly.

      Delete
    5. I promoted you when you first revealed yourselves, and while reviewing a demo was probably a mistake I still had some faith in you remaining. After all, everybody slips up once in a while, and I'm pretty sure that, had you been able to continue, the final product would have been splendid.

    6. Events simply would have gone smoother for both sides if you would have politely asked to speak with us. At that time, we would have been more that happy to divulge information including our plans for the real game.

    8. I'll be sure to be more careful in the future. Still, it'd be nice if we could communicate more often. I can't exactly help you guys out with the development though, as then I would be disqualified from reviewing it.

    11. Please keep in mind you've only seen a demo, a rough one at that, designed only to give the fans a taste of the story. Nothing else. The true engine is far, far, far, more advanced. I can't say much, but we brought in some very skilled people. As for as voice acting goes, we only ask people to remember we don't aim to mimic the original va's. Simply to capture the character's personality.

    16. I'll just drop my personnal touch on this matter given the lite version has triggered a lot of local controversies, which may, or may not have influenced your decisions,

As a demo, your game is supposed to give a preview of what your full game is going to be like. Even if you're saying you're going to improve it, a 1Gb demo reflect badly on the future. Say ACT II is going to be twice as large for example, would we have to expect another 2Gb large version? will it still be as CPU intensive, maybe even more? Will it have the same flaws ans lack of options? You may not have, but this is something I have seriously considered ever since Xtux have posted his review and allowed me to find your game to test it.

Given the size of your team and the amount of resources you can have at disposal, the state of the demo, and the lack of new version/improvement in the 5 months that has followed its release, greatly worried me. The fact you also showed yourself vulnerable to sabotage adds up to the weakness of this project.

I've been tired of waiting and working unheard about this, and I finally found someone who can have a say and spread the word two weeks ago, and I didn't want to miss that opportunity. My message with this game is, don't make us lose hope and please reflect your level of seriousness over the things you produce: as I have demonstrated with wise management of resources, WTP has the potential to become a great game.

On a final note and as suggested, I wouldn't mind working with you. Not as a part of your team, given I'm mostly a lone wolf, but as "co operation" - but as you guess by my dedication, I am okay if you want me to do some things done quickly, as long as I get part of the support myself. For example, if you gave me in advance your scripts, I could get a lite engine ready quickly so you could easily release various versions in one go, not only your standard executable, but also HTML5/Flash/Android variants.

I wish you good luck on your future projects with the hope ACT II+ of Welcome to Ponyville still belong to those - BlitzProg

    17. If it was a concern you needed simply to email us. We try to respond to everyone in a timely manner, but with most of us working real jobs or involved with school our time is very limited. Up until today, the game was undergoing a full rewrite to the first act. New casting had to be done, and artists were needed to replace the assets that were originally stolen by another sabotage attempt. In addition, a new engine has been under works and was in its testing stages. This new engine meant new features, so the story had to be altered to fit this. 5 months would be a lot of time if we had every moment of each day to divulge to the game. But sadly, that is not the case. Everyone here at FG loves ponies, but sadly ponies don't pay our bills. Fan projects take a lot of time, we tried to give people that time. But, it has become apparent that for some, that wasn't enough.

    19. Working without popularity or support whatsoever is my own problem. This lite engine was built in two weeks (binary language, design, programming and testing included) alone with the active morale support of only one person, which was in my opinion a faster and more efficient alternative than e-mailing you (I wasn't even aware you had an centralized e-mail in the first place). What guarantee would I had to be taken seriously if I said I would remake your full game in a nutshell anyway?

Remember I also have things to do in real life and I don't have all of my time available either, this is why I'm only eventually agreeing to team with you rather than join you, I am also creating my own games on a very large scale, which takes time especially when, unlike you, I barely have anyone behind to support me. The website I'm hosting my games on is a paid service costing me ~15$ a month, along with other softwares I'm paying and art I'm commissioning, quickly adding up to several hundred of dollars taken straight from my savings.

  10. Saboteur if you are reading this, why? Why would you go and destroy something that wasn't hurting you in the slightest? These people put a lot of effort into something to make other people happy. They didn't have to do it and they certainly didn't have to do it for us. But instead they have dedicated time and effort to something that was actually worthwhile in this world.

I honestly hope you are happy with yourself. Because I know after doing something like this I'd have to be the damn happiest man in the world or else I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing I destroyed something this amazing and unique produced during a time when such things are nigh nonexistant.

I honestly hope you burn in hell but because this fandom is so great I'm just going to say this.

    Have a nice day.

To the creators of this game. So you have stuff deleted. So what? If you truely believe in this game and the effort you have put in it then you shouldn't feel defeated. If anything I'd view this as a challenge to overcome. You know what you need to do and how. So if you truely and honestly believe in what you are doing here. Then please continue when you are ready. The fans will wait, and when something worthwhile gets done they'll be ready for it.

If and when you are ready. I can only hope you take the necessary precautions to stop such future acts against you and this game.

Now if you don't mind I'm going to sit here and wait. If needed please feel free to ask for my or others help in solving this bump in the road. Until then I shall continue to believe in this game and be diligent in following it's progress.

Take your time. I'll be here and I know others will be too.

    2. I actually heard somewhere that the saboteur is a person trying to rid the internet of bronies and also there some rumors that this guy might target equestriadaily next..

      Delete
    3. I'm actually a bit amused by his attempts. If he really does try such things I'm sure he'll find out that the bronies have their own hackers who I bet would be willing to put him in his place. But, I guess we'll just have to see now won't we?

Regardless, at the end of the day the bronies will have survived and his efforts will be for naught. In the off chance he actually does succeed in some great fashion though then I think he'll have more to worry about then counter hackers. Like the government.

  11. Mlp online died first. Then Fighting is magic, and now even Welcome in Ponyville?! Of all the games I named, I liked your game the most! For the first time, however, this wasn't caused by Hasbro, but by some pathetic little scum – tell us who it was, tell us who to punish!

Also, please, please don't abandon the project completely. Take a break, it doesn't matter how long, but please continue. I'm sure more than a few guys would be happy to help you with whatever you need (I would too, if I had the necessary skills :( ).

  12. Why do people have to be such assholes?.. This game is what I had looked forward to most in the entire brony community, and now it's likely gone forever. I would beg and pay you guys if it meant continued work on this, but it's your decision.

    ReplyDelete
  13. This is some very sad news indeed. I can safely say that simply as a person who likes games, ignoring my Bronyness, your game really had me intrigued and excited. The coming together of such talented individuals to make something is always an incredible event and I'm sorry to see this happen to you guys.
I can understand your decision to give up. I myself have been through countless creative projects myself. Some I've completed others I haven't. Some people have loved and some people have tried to destroy. I've suffered computer hard drive failures with no backups. I've had no end of troubles but also countless highs. Being creative is always an emotional process and you always want to put your heart and soul into it...thus when something bad happens it seems like someone has just yanked your very being into the nether.
I just want to remind you that despite the hate and destruction these saboteurs have caused there are still countless people out there that adore your work (myself included) and would love to see it continue. As I said, I understand your decision to give up but I will ask one thing. Give it some time. Nothing is ever wasted and despite the set back I can still see you all making a strong comeback.
We will wait and see what happens. Should you decide to shut down I know that we will all understand. But if you decide to strike back know that we will all be behind you and, in the words of Twilight Sparkle, "there's nothing we can't overcome if we all work together".
However this turns out you have my thanks Filly Gamez, thank you for all the hard work you've done.

I've been checking your site practically every day, just to see the progress you've made; so, to see you throw away all that effort is incredibly disconcerting. I was looking forward to your game more than Fighting is Magic, because you all created something incredibly unique--something that is unlike the typical genre of games we see in this fandom. I urge you to take some time to rethink things, as you have many fans supporting you. Nonetheless, I will be patient and wish you the best.

  21. I truely hope this project continues at some point. It is very sad that there is so much "Brony Hate" from some people, that they make serious efforts to hurt the fandom by attacking popular bronies and projects. I love "Welcome to Ponyville" and am constantly popping on your site to see what is new and was anxiously awaiting part 2. The work was top notch, and it was very enjoyable.

Please don't let the haters win; they are a very small minority and do not deserve the satisifaction of knowing they have ruined something that so many enjoy. It is depressing that some people are so unhappy with themselves, that they try to destroy anything that makes others happy, just to try to bring everyone else down to their level.

  32. *~HUZZAH~* I am happy that Filly Gamez will go on! Welcome to Ponyville is something I am looking constantly forward too. I hope that recovery of lost data is possible. As a side note; I am not sure how/where data is stored; but have you considered an external/portable hard drive as an emergency/non-hackable data back-up? They can simply be unplugged when not in use. NewEgg has several 1TB ones for around 80$ USD. I would certainly be willing to throw in a few bits via paypal towards one if it keeps this from ever happening again.

This project of yours is too exciting and too well done to not be allowed to finish by the actions of a few unhappy souls.

As another side note; if you have an idea who is hacking/harassing you; it is illegal to hack into somones system/data; and certainly when their intent is malicious, deleting data and disrupting work. Reporting them to their provider is a good start. Most providers take abuse of their ToS very seriously, and if nothing actually happens, perhaps being put on notice by their provider that they are now watching/reviewing them might just remind them that there are real-life consequences for hacking and harassing behaviour.

Do the people who made the files for the project not have copies on their respective computers? I'm assuming you used a cloud-based system to collaborate, but wouldn't members save the parts they are individually responsible for on their own devices as well?

  36. Dudes at FG,
Sorry to hear this shit happened, and I can see why you'd call off the project completely, but you can't let a low down, piece of fuck take you out! You guys spent months creating an amazing game, one that us as fans only saw a demo of. And as said by many before me, we'll wait. We'll slap the piss out of the hacker that did this, hell might even castrate the son of a bitch.

But please, don't give up hope! The only way someone can win, is if the other person gives up completely. I ask that you guys take a month or two, hell maybe a year, but don't quit completely! You have the support of so many bronies, so many people who thoroughly enjoyed your game. People have come here and offered you guys donations, tips, and future advice, along with moral support. I know nothing that goes into game making, other than the fact that it takes literally hundreds of hours, and I am unable to give you solid advice.

Reading through the other comments, however, I saw that many have a tech background, and could help you. Please, take in everything before you decide to up and quit. I know what it feels like to have everything thrown away by a dumb dicked doucher, but you gotta fight through it and ultimately overcome whatever obstacles get in your way

In the end, it's your call, and we'll respect you either way. Not only respect, but understand and love y'all for what you've done. As my closing statement, Every lacrosse game I play, it's going to be for you guys; for your hard work and amazing dedication to your fans. Know that you have a lax bro in your corner, ready to fight.

    Peace,

  37. Why not keep an often updated offline storage for all your assets if you KNOW you have enemies? If your assets are massive, this certainly might be mildly time-consuming, but come on...

    ReplyDelete
  38. This is extremely weird to me. Why would people even hate the idea of this game enough to purposefully sabotage it? The whole project is basically a standard fanfic in a different format.

I mean, I would understand this kind of reaction if this was a porn VN, with people crusading for fandom's "purity" and all that. Also, backup. There is little more horrible in this world than losing the results of your work, especially if you had power to prevent this.

(Epic music in the background )
    But I tell you what,
it's not enough to kill this fandom. Even if we fall, we gonna rise like a bucking phoenix and burn them to ashes! This fandom gave me to much, so I'm gonna fight for it. And I think... I KNOW that i'm not the only one. HUZZAH ! ...And I'm angry again... But this is good anger.

Perhaps after all this gets ironed out you could take some different measures to stop the hacker. Don't sit down and let a bully continue, FIGHT BACK! Think of Fighting is Magic as inspiration. They are fighting a tough legal battle against Hasbro in order to continue development. You guys are stronger than this liar. Take into acount how we feel and how we want to help. I know that you don't support this kind of behavior but you could ask around the internet for a good hacker and have that person hack into that URL in secret in order to get back. Here's to hoping you guys get back on your feet.

  42. ...I just don't understand what's going on here. Why would this game garner such a level of hate as for someone to sabotage it not once, but twice? Only someone with an unbelievably malicious mind could put this much effort into causing grief for no purpose. Humanity... I'm incredibly disappointed in you.

Don't give up on your incredible work because of one pitiable wretch of a human being. The fandom has taken enough disappointments as it is.

  44. Guys, you CAN NOT Give up, that's what they want, the haters, they want to knock us Bronies down, to make us feel bad, and to destroy our fandom, but we can't let them! We have to fight, to stand up, to defend what we love, our unity, our ponies. Only when we give up, do we truly lose. Bronies Unite!

  46. No! Please to dear god no! I've check on this site everyday for about a year now just to get the updates on the game whether your close to finished or not. Please don't stop, it'll crush so many of us

  47. To those involved in making the game i would just like to say thank you. While i too hope you decide to go foward and things work out i can understand the choices you have to make. I would however like to say thank you for act 1. No matter the criticism i enjoyed myself for 2 hours thanks to your work. Here is hoping for a happy ending to all this --Mr.E

This was one of the only things I still had to look forward to. Fine! Quit. Take the easy way out. I stopped caring five canceled projects ago.

  50. Why would someone actually care so much about trying to wreck a little community project as to go in and delete their files? The first thing, with not asking the artists' permission, was sort of weak and whiny, but to bang on and do this is pathetic. Like an angry little toddler. Best of luck, guys! Your project was and is amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Perhaps a data recovery expert could help, since deleting a file in entirety is a very difficult task. Failing that, there must be at least backups, right?
The best action would be to go off the grid, don't use the internet to store any file. Of course, your team may not have an on-site location and just be a bunch of people scattered throughout the world. In that case, I would recommend restricting and monitoring usage of team data servers. Check access logs daily, use whitelisting, that sort of thing. If all else fails, just up the frequency of backups, least then less would be lost if this happens again...

  52. I'm very sad to hear that a lot of your data was deleted by these... "people" but you can't give up on this wonderous project just because of these haters because then they would have won.
I've been looking forward to your game the moment I saw a post about it on one of my old forum and I'm sure a lot of other people are looking forward to it. So please don't give up, keep fighting the hate as we can be both your shield and sword.

  56. Whoever is sabotaging your work is targeting you, cause you're a small group and vulnerable to attacks. This saboteur won't stop until you're thrown in the towel. Luckily you can out-smart this person. I studied computer courses in college, I've been taught of the risks when it comes to the internet. It's always best to look over the system and network and spot anything that can destroy or alter files.

One of the steps to make backup copies of your work (unless you've already done that) onto external hard drives. No matter how much progress you made, just keep saving everything (and I do mean EVERYTHING), whether it's a minor or major alteration. You can just insert the hard drive, drag files into it, disconnect and there you go. That way whenever an attack happens, you can use the backup files to pick up where you left off. If you're strapped for cash and/or couldn't afford one or more, we'll be happy to make donations. Also (this is optional BTW), you can persuade your staff to save their work as well. There's always safety in numbers.

Relying on online backups alone may not help (depending on the project), since nearly every website can be attacked by hackers in any given day.

Just a reminder that you gained a following who want to help and support your road to achieving goals. None of them want to see you abandon it just because of a pothole in the road. If you need any help, don't be afraid to ask for help. Remember we're here to give you the help and support you need.

  57. Dear staff of Filly Gamez,

I discovered the existence of Welcome To Ponyville when I found a Let's Play of it in Youtube. I downloaded the demo immediately, I played it, and I can say without exaggeration that it was one of the happiest moments of my life.

Your game brought me a great joy, even if it was only for a few hours. I wouldn’t like to see it die this way, and I’m really happy to hear that there’s still a glimmer of hope. You have my best wishes for the future, I really hope things get better and the harassment stops. Nothing would make me happier than see good news, I don’t care about waiting. Be it in the next months or in the next year, I’ll be faithfully waiting.

Until then, thank you for everything, and good luck.

  58. Filly Gamez, I thank you for not giving up on this game! If anything, this game got me into My little Pony...without this I would still be a hater. So, I pray that one day this game will be finish!

  62. This can't be true?! it just can't...

that is what i thought when i first came here and read the title Filly Gamez crew i know i'm just some person you've never met but i am a long time fan of your work here, the joy and fun your game and projects brought me was amazing, you're all wondeful people with amazing tallent, you didn't let this crapsack stomp all over you and your project last time, take a break by all means, for as long as you need to but you can't let some total pricks push you around and scaring you away from your creativity, and you guys giving up on this amazing project, i can understand it, but it sickens me as well that you're throwing in the towel and allowing the haters to win

press on i say, show them you'll not be picked on or stopped, you're stronger than that and your following is behind you, willing to help you through these tough times, you have a wonderful team and a truly fantastic story and you owe it, not to me and the rest of your fans, but to yourselves to see this through to the very end, and stick to it no matter what squalls come your way.

in case you do decide after a while that you wish to once again take the helm of this game i'd recomend each member of the take saving the files on their respective computers (not just on one) and as an added precaution investing in a external memory box which you may save the files to while working on it and then unplugged once done with it

i have said all i wished to say, and i shall only add that if this truly is the end, we will understand and respect your decision and i shall think no less of anyone, but promise us one thing.

promise to make sure that it is truly 'your' decision, not affected by the hate, but because it is really the best thing for your team and it's what 'you' want

  65. This f***ing tears it. I have ALWAYS been able to handle haters when it came to them making fun of bronies, or trying to be verbally abusive, because that's just words. That's just their worthless opinion, and that's easy to ignore and get by. But, to actually abuse their technical skills and pull this crap?! It's honestly depressing to think that there are people like that out there. If I were to bump into this scumbag on the street, I would sincerely consider breaking their face and bouncing their head off of the concrete.......and I don't usually consider myself to be a violent person, hell, quite the opposite actually, but that's just how rediculous this all is.

Now that I've let that out (and yes, I DO feel better) I'd like to personally thank FG and everyone associated with them and "Welcome to Ponyville." It goes without saying how superb your work is, and how much we all appreciate it...but I'm saying it anyway. :3 Thank You! I wish I could offer any kind of technical aid, but unfortunately I simply do not have the "know how" needed for making games or running engines or anything like that. But, if there ever is anything I myself or us as a community can do to help, you have to let us know. We lean on one another to make this work, 'cause that's what bronies are about.

    Brony on, friends. Brony on.

  67. I'm still trying to figure out how a single saboteur could cause this much damage. Surely work progress has been backed up multiple times for this? I mean, I don't claim to be an expert in visual novel design, but this does seem a bit odd.

Eh, whatever. I sincerely hope you decide to continue with the project. Despite its flaws, I found the demo interesting enough to keep an eye on this project, and I'd love to see it completed and released.

  71. And thus another bright shining star fades from the sky. I was so excited for this game, not even because it was about ponies, but because I simply love this style of game. The fact that it was about ponies was just a fun bonus. I could only assume it must make you guys at FG happy to see such an outpour of love and support for you and your work. I suppose all I could really do is join them in saying don't give up. You can't let these kind of people win, not only for the sake of the fans you don't wanna disappoint, but also for yourselves. After all, could you really rest easy knowing you rolled over for the close minded and spiteful? I couldn't and I would think you couldn't either. So stand strong, stiffen that upper lip, steel your resolve, and press forward. And to the saboteur who I can only assume is on here reading these, after all, if you don't revel in your accomplishments, what's the point? I can only say, you've done an excellent job of forcing your beliefs and opinions onto others, but you have to realize your making yourself a target. There's more than one hacker in the world, and considering how large the brony community is, I'm sure a nice amount of them are on our side. People will be looking for you, to return the damage you've cause ten fold. Take the victory you've earned, and step aside, so that people can continue to do what they love, make games.(Pony or otherwise) If you get out now, then no one else would have to suffer. However you have to know that if you continue this kind of harassment, there will be repercussions. So to wrap up this light novel, don't give up FG, no matter how much hate there is for it, ponies and bronies will never die. And hacker, you should take your trophy which I can only assume is the sadness you've brought this community, and step aside; for our sake and yours.

  73. Truly sorry to hear that you fine folks have been unjustly targeted in this manner. I sincerely hope you do not allow the hate of others stop you from pursuing the worthwhile goal of finishing such a well made game. The demo alone was highly entertaining and impressive. If that is all we end up seeing I'd say you can still be proud to have produced something that enjoyable. Continue the project if you can; protect your work and endure these attacks as nothing more than setbacks.

  75. I'm not sure what to say.. I really hope you will continue on the game and release the rest of the story. you have many fans that would like to see it continued (which you probably already know) and I for one don't care about the size of the game (which seemed to be a BIG issue for EQG, I mean really? everyone I know has at least 2 TB).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The game was so massive because of the lack of audio compression. In fact, the game could have been around 50-70 megabytes large if Filly Gamez had scaled their images and compressed their audio files. I'm guessing that the team probably forgot to compress the audio in the rush to release the demo, but if they remember to do it before releasing Act 2 it will be much smaller than Act 1.

    2. Don't let a childish sense of morality keep you from doing what needs to be done. Not retaliating just makes you an easier target, not "better than them." It's an eye for an eye.

      Delete
    3. An eye for an eye just makes the whole world blind. Someone has to be the bigger person. If someone steals from a loved one, does that mean we should steal from the family of the thief? If someone were to destroy something that people care about, should we destroy what he cares about? If a group of people fly a plane into a building and kill a few thousand innocents, should we fly drones and bomb their innocents?
Morality is certainly not "childish". Niether is the phrase "love and tolerate". Just because you are on the receiving end of wrong doing does not mean you return it.

"If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head."

Now, wether you're of the Christian faith or not, this is still pretty true. Just be the bigger person, the better person.

      Rant/preachy thing over.
