The individual placed in charge of acquiring backgrounds for us, EvilPanda, has deliberately sabotaged this project. More after the break...
EvilPanda came to us at the beginning of our project and offered to help us acquire needed backgrounds. We saw no reason to turn down the help, so we gladly accepted on the condition that he speak to each artist individually. He informed me that he had done just this. As this project is designed to be for the community, by the community, we wanted to involve as many popular fandom artists as possible. It has been brought to our attention he did not speak to a single artist about the use of their work.
When confronted about this he informed us that he works for both another project and a blogger. With this, he stated he had never intended on helping this team, but the opposite. I never felt the need to go back and check that he had indeed contacted the artists. It seemed unlikely that someone would lie, especially regarding a project that is being developed as a free gift. His motivation for this is unclear, but we have our suspicions as to the blogger he is working with. As for now, we can not say until concrete evidence is found.
For the artists that were damaged by this, I can only express my most sincere apologies to them, and my anger for this incident. We will be posting a full accreditation of the art used to our site shortly. In addition, we will remove all artwork not created by a staffed team member from our archives. Why someone would behave in such a manner is far beyond me, but it goes without saying this a pretty bucked up move. I would strongly advise anyone that knows this individual to NOT work or associate with them.
I personally apologize for this incident, and will work to ensure this does not happen again.
This being the case, I have something for all of you. Given this situation, I am beyond disgusted. As this game is made as a gift for all of you, we here at Filly Gamez would like your thoughts on what our next move should be. We can continue this project and move on with Act 2, but we leave this entirely in your hands. This has never been our project, it has been yours. A gift made for you the community. As our game is about decisions, it seems only fair to let you, the players, make this decision.
What should Filly Gamez do?
1. Continue on with Act 2 and make the necessary changes to Act 1?

ReplyDeleteI think I speak for an awful lot of people when I say that of course I want this project to continue. Act 1 was not perfect, but it was nonetheless very enjoyable, and it would be a shame if the interesting story that it began wasn't seen through to the end.

I'm sure the artists will understand he situation, I mean it's not like you KNEW that you didn't have permission.

ReplyDeleteI fully understand your disgust. Even though I am very aware of the fact that people are capable of such things, it stills baffles me tthat they choose to do so. Human nature I guess.
I have played through Act 1 of WtP a couple pf times, and I cannot stress how much I already love the thing. I agree that it has some minor flaws, but that's no surprise, and I am certain such flaws will be ruled out later. I simply love the humor in it, (WARNING!! Light spoilers) Lyra mumbking humans, Derpy's obsession with muffins etc, etc.
Normally I am not an admirer of fan made work containing, well, fan voices. I had to take that point of view up to revision after this. I was astounded by the quality and spirit that's being put into this, and I am now more willing to give other projects with fan voicework a try.
I would gladly offer my help if I had the necessary skillset, but I'm afraid I don't. So I'll just throw a donation your way sooner or later.
I believe it should be pretty clear what my answer to your question is, but I'll give a straight one nonetheless.
Please continue this project. It has so much potential and I would really love to follow this.

ReplyDeleteI say to continue with the project. Just because the artists weren't asked before doesn't mean that you can't ask them now. Explaining the situation to them might help you, but it would be understandable if they said no.
You could even just take screenshots from the show itself, if you must. But don't let this project die because many, myself included, love Welcome to Ponyville and wish to see it completed.
Do not give up hope. We'll love you guys no matter how many jackasses betray you. Peace out.

ReplyDeleteWhen I first booted up Welcome to ponyville, I was a giddy as a school filly and that feeling didn't stop throughout the mutliple playthroughs, Each time I went through the story, I wondered. What's next? How can this story get even more awesome? What is the next pony going to say to me?

ReplyDeleteI agree with continuing the project. I found Act 1 to be very enjoyable and I'm very interested in where the story is going to go next.
I can tell a lot of care has gone into making this and seeing someone do this is simply awful. Hopefully the artists understand what has happened, but it's understandable if they're angry.
Please don't give up. If you do, it'll really only bring joy to the person who tried to sabotage it, while the people who have been patiently waiting to play it will feel let down.

Someone leaked their unfinished work and got a little upset about it but they took control of the situation and still they carry on to this day.
I don't think that question really needed to be asked. I don't think anybody would want this amazing project to be discontinued because of the things that guy has done. Actually, quite frankly, after reading your post, I haven't really understood what he did anyway, or how exactly that influenced the outcome of the project. I guess the language barrier still gives me some trouble sometimes^^ Well, anyway, it would be a waste of all the effort that has already been put in the project if you cancel it now due to this, so I would really like it to be continued, just like pretty much everybody else.

I can't really comprehend why someone would deliberatly seek to deprive artists of their rights like this, but as long as we all make sure the artists know how much their work is appreciated and we thank them humbly for their understanding, I really, really want this project to go on ahead.

Okay, so... I lost my cool to some degree there. I'm sorry, I don't tend to reduce people to a "thing" for something so small (well, small after taking into account global events), it's just... Why? It doesn't make sense. I mean, I know some people just want to watch the world burn, but, from an objective standpoint... really? Sabotaging a free, fan-made game? By insuring copyright infringement? I mean, unless he grabbed them from the most anal-retentive or insecure artists, it was a pretty bullshit plan. Then there's the fact that those effected by it were bronies, the most accepting, understanding, and calm fandoms I've ever seen.
DeleteI can understand your trust in your team members, don't let him change that about you, nor let him discourage you, one person can do a lot of damage, true, but with a project like this, it's nothing that can't be repaired. People like him will sadly always exist, but by making this post and the accreditation post, you've made public the accident, the fact that the rest of the team didn't know it happened, and your desire to make amends, which can go VERY far when asking the artists for your forgiveness.
All of that work, planning, and ambition shouldn't be thrown away just because of one bump in the road...... well, okay, more like a decent-sized hill, but it's not like the game engine was compromised, it's just a matter of asking if the artists want to pull out, get some new art to replace the ones than do, and then switching files and file references about, it's nothing that can't be fixed.
It is my personal opinion that you must continue. This project has been a dream come true for many bronies (myself included) and we cannot allow the actions of one sabouter to stop it. Doing so would be like announcing the sabouters victory. I think you need to reach out to the artists of our community, asking them to volunteer their work to the project. No matter what happens I believe this project must be continued.

All I can say is that I absolutely loved Act 1 and I would love to live through the rest of the story as my unicorn. I can not offer much more than my prayers and these words but however you decide you have created something wonderful in the Act 1 and I will remember it along with other great fan stories and official episodes.

I am playing through the game (as it is so far) at the moment and am very impressed with what I have seen. I think this project definitely has potential and I would be very sad to see it fall apart like so many free, independent projects before it. Onwards to adventure!

ReplyDeleteThe most obvious reason is that the Panda boy would have acquired his goal. This is unacceptable, you can't let a troll win. Because if you do, you're just going to give in more and more. Put your foot down and say "No." Trolls aren't worth the air they breathe, much less the satisfaction they get when they successfully troll.
As for another reason; you've worked too damn hard to let something like this get to you. You've put months of time into this when you could be doing other things. Do NOT let these last couple of months be a waste. Not only will fans be upset, you'll be upset because you could have spent those months doing other things.
A 3rd reason: Don't let the voice talents have their work go unappreciated. I now have a new list of voice talents to look up because I genuinely enjoyed listening to dialog in this game, which is something I can't say for all games. Sure, there is a few hiccups here and there but NOTHING can be perfect. They are great, and they deserve more recognition.
I could state even more reasons, but there are just too many that the best way would be just to give a few excellent reasons.
As I said before, I am a game developer/designer, too. If you need any help at all, whether it being with just this situation or otherwise, feel free to contact me. We game developers need to stick together!

DeleteWhatever happens, happens, but I think everyone who enjoyed act 1 will agree to patiently wait for act 2, even if act 1 has to be revised in some necessary ways. There are always those of us who will gladly lend help if necessary in sticky situations, and I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for the overall work ethic and amount of work put into this project.
I would like it continued. not only did i enjoy what i played so far think it would be a excellent game. not continuing it at this point would only make his goal achieved. he did it so you could be taken down for copyright making his project or whatever it was more popular famous ect. only reason i can think of besides just being a complete dick for the hell of it. but tocoool put it better then i and im sure i'm just repeating what every other person here has said. continue the great work you have one of the best works in progress. im looking forward to the complete game :3

There are those, such as EvilPanda, who don't like this idea at all, and just want to see it burn. However, there are many, many more, I guarantee, that love this, and would like to see it continued. I would like to see this continued. My deepest and sincerest apologies to everyone who has had work stolen from them.

Wondering how were the artist harmed at all if their is no profit? If the worst of it is lacking credit then it is possible to save some of these drafted work by talking to the artist and explaining the situation chances are they will forgive you. If done correctly and the artist allow you should be able to still use lots of the art work.I am no expert so I have no idea if this is possible, so I am just throwing out some hopefully useful advice.

I would like to see Act 2 and the rest of the projected finished. Act 1 was amazing. As the comment show, you have not lost the support of the community at all. To be honest, I would play Act 2 even if it had no backgrounds because the writing, the character art and voice acting are just so awesome. I personally would hate to see this die.

ReplyDeleteThis idea might make me seem a little paranoid, but this is important and needs to be considered if it hasn't already. If you have never seen Evilepanda and he is going under a fake name then it is quite possible that he is planning on sabotaging other projects (ex Equestrian Games). Word must be spread about this possibility and everyone on a project like this might want to double if not triple check the integrity of their helpers. DO NOT OVER DUE IT BUT CHECK.

No. No no no. Cancelling the game shouldn't even BE an option! I highly enjoyed part one myself, and I raged SO hard when I saw that this happened. I hope that everything about those guys gets exposed about what they did.
ReplyDeleteIf any artists seriously don't want their art in this excellent game, they should be able to be replaced, easy as that. (I doubt artists would care if it was used in a game like this as long as they get proper credit.)
I will add ONE stipulation to my choice. If this incident has made you lose your passion for working on this project, I understand and wouldn't blame you for stopping. It'd be a big disappointment, but understandable.
So many people care about this game and want to see it come to a (Highly Varied) complete ending, myself included. If the game is in the hands of the fans, by all means, continue! Don't let that Jerk have his way.

ReplyDeleteI've already put a comment here but after playing through the game again last night I just have to speak again. While listening to the credits music I just felt something build up inside of me. I felt positive that the game should be continued. I felt genuine horror for the idea that the wonderful game I had just played through could possibly end. Right now I am in University, working to become an Archaeologist. I am doing this because I cannot do what I really want to do, and that would be to actually live in the pasts that I wish to study. But an even wilder, better, and for more impossible dream of mine would be to live in Equestria as the Zebra OC I spent almost two hours meticuolously designing on Pony Creator. This game gives that impossible dream some reality.

ReplyDeleteI highly doubt anyone's going to tell you to give up on the project. The people who would be most affected by this would be those who had their work stolen, for whose case I say speak to, apologize, and try to work something out as best you can.
ReplyDeleteDon't give up on something you put work and effort into because of one bad staff member. Make amends and chalk it up as a learning experience.
I know how you feel, and it is indeed quite sickening, but don't let this person succeed in destroying something that you and your team put your hearts into that easily, especially if that was their goal.

Under the circumstances, it might be inappropriate to continue without speaking with each of the artists first. Given the nature of this fandom they might be willing to give some amnesty since this was all just and accident. Perhaps giving them a link to this page so that they can understand what is going on would be beneficial. Anyway about it, I hope that you do continue in the production of Act II

If you won't continue just give me permission to work on the game I'll find new art, and voice actors if I have to. I've already figured out how you coded lua, and how the application interprets it. (I still can't find the artwork for the 20% cooler bed though).

I enjoyed Act 1 to the fullest, I now for a fact I and every player wants Act 2. I would help with the art, but i can not draw. So here is hoping for Act 2.

Now what you guys should understand in this ... there is no one (and I mean NO ONE!) Within the fan community that would want you guys to stop this! Whether they play the game or not everyone in the MLP: FIM community loves to see projects like this because it shows how creative we are and how much greatness we can aspire to! And this game is a very ambitious project that proves how glorious our community has grown. Make the necessary changes to Act 1 (or even resolve some of the issues that I mentioned in my review of Act 1 over at Equestria Gaming), then move on to Act 2 and make it better then the last. Just because you messed up a bit at first doesn't mean that you'll make the same mistakes the second time around, eh?

As others have said bad apple break off and move on. I loved act 1 and was a little sad when it was over and I can't wait for act 2 (hopefully it doesn't take to long). I am sure they artists will be ok with it. This community is strong and understanding. I am sure if you tell them they will be ok with it. (heck some probably would be happy that their work is being used). Keep the path guys and get act 2 to us as soon as you can. Brohoof /)

ReplyDeleteI say this game should continue. You guys have a real gem here. All it needs is a little bit of polish to make it shine. For a fan made game, this is beyond impressive. The backgrounds are well detailed, the music is great, some of the voice acting is astounding, and the dialogue fits each ponies personalities to a T. That being said, I hope that the wonderful people of Filly Gamez can get past this little bump in the road and will continue with the project and would like to offer any assistance if needed.

ReplyDeleteSo, happened to find this game two days ago. Laughed at the idea, but thought it'd be fun to do. Went to download it yesterday and saw this very post. What this person did was horrible, yes, and you are right to be disgusted. The fact that you say you would not only remove the artwork should the artist wish but would also end the project entirely only goes to show one thing; Filly Gamez has integrity and honesty. This is gonna sound uber corny, but I pride my self on being honest to myself and those around me. Seeing you guys take this course of action has only served to raise you higher in my opinion. I didn't want to post anything though, until after playing the game.
Now, I'm only just now got to the fourth "chapter", but I have to beg you to continue. I'm thinking "Oh, Visual Novel! I can watch/read while working on my homework!" I'm playing and reading when Vinyl comes up and demands my bed. I'm dieing laughing through the entire exchange while cutting up some newspaper for my presentation. Then comes the Nightmare Scene and the jump scare. Papers go everywhere, scissors hit the floor, and I'm staring at the screen with my hand over my mouth. If you guys can write a story that makes me laugh and scream within moments of each other, then you have succeeded in SERIOUSLY impressing me. Don't let this troll win, keep on with this amazing work of literary, musical, and visual art.
TL;DR: You guys are taking the correct course of action. You guys are amazing. Your story is amazing. I will cry if this project is discontinued.

Sure, I wish you could have had more control over what you did and said, but it was meant to be an introduction so it was to be expected. I am really looking forward to Act 2 and hope you don't stop. That is really messed up for that guy to do that, but maybe you could contact the artists and explain the situation? I'm sure they would understand and would be happy to have their work included in this project. It would only help their popularity. Just putting my 2 bits in. Anyways, thank you so much for Act 1 and looking forward to Act 2.

ReplyDeleteAnd, as others have pointed out, you would be giving him what he wants by stopping. One thing that I can say is that you should personally speak to each of these artists and tell them what happened. Ask them if they want you to remove their art, and apologize that it was used without their knowledge or permission. Seems like the only logical option from here.

I have to say, I had an AMAZING experience with part 1.
ReplyDeleteAnd I know that it's just scratching the surface of what the full product could be. I look forward to playing farther, and developing the player's relationships with the characters, and to seeing my decisions have more of an impact on the story as the game goes on.
I feel the pain in what you wrote, that you feel betrayed. I am truly sorry and wish there was something I could do make it better, but it is no fault of your own that someone decided to act like that towards you.
What I can say is that your game (or what's released of it so far) has already inspired me. When you said that this game was made as a gift to the community, I was quite amazed that someone (or rather, some people) would make such a big project simply as a thank you and as a gift. Though, playing your game, I began to feel the desire to be able to donate to the community, too. Though I don't know how I would do that at the moment, I definitely now understand that desire.
So thank you for everything so far, and I really hope to be able to play the rest of your game.

Like I'm sure what many people have already said, it would be a shame to let this drop after already coming this far! I'm sure that any artists that may have been connected with this "incident" would feel the same way. We all understand that the fault was not yours; it was the work of a malicious insider that abused your trust. Please, keep up the good work!
